Recycling Protects Our Natural Environment and Saves Resources Continue the Holiday Cheer by Recycling Your Christmas Trees and Holiday Greenery
Memphis, TN (January 2022) – Once Santa and his reindeer have headed home and Christmas tree needles are scattered on the floor, it’s time to toss the once fresh-smelling tree. The City of Memphis Storm Water Department wants to remind all residents to properly dispose their live Christmas trees and holiday greenery by either recycling or leaving them out for curbside pickup. Properly disposing and recycling live Christmas trees and holiday greenery keeps thousands of pounds of evergreens from being deposited into landfills.
City of Memphis solid waste customers can take their live Christmas trees and greenery to three bagged leaf drop-off locations during the month of January:
Collins Yard at 304 Collins Street (just north of Poplar Ave) – open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday
John F. Kennedy Park at 4577 Raleigh Lagrange Rd – open Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Farrisview at 3207 Farrisview Blvd – open Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
We ask residents to remove all stands and decorations from the Christmas tree before taking them to a drop-off location or placing them at the curb. Residents will need to provide their latest MLGW bill when dropping off at any of the locations above to prove they pay the solid waste fee. Customers are urged to take their trees to one of these locations through January.
The Memphis Botanic Garden is also offering a recycling option. It has teamed up with The Yard (a mulch yard) to accept Christmas greenery for recycling. The Yard is located at 1735 Thomas Road, just off Covington Pike and Pleasant View Road and is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m.to 2 p.m. Be sure to mention Memphis Botanic Garden when dropping off your tree, and they will donate $5 to the Memphis Botanic Garden and recycle your tree into mulch.
Solid Waste crews will continue picking up leaves, branches, and Christmas trees from the curb during scheduled bulk weeks. Any household garbage must be bagged and placed in a green City-issued garbage cart. Please be sure to leave organic debris in a separate pile beside your carts at the curb. To find your schedule, go to www.memphistn.gov or use the Memphis Curbside Collection app available for all Apple and Android devices.
